I prefer to manually start it - I'd know exactly where and how it was started. Use 'ps aux' to see command line options used by your present instance, then kill it, cd to /tmp, su to a desired username, check that coredumps are not disabled (limits -c), then start the milter from a command line leaving out the -u option. Make sure that it was compiled with debugging info (-g), the milter itself with its library, and a sendmail milter library with which it is linked as well.
