what is the point of dkim then ?

In general, DKIM can pass across simple forwarding, where SPF fails.

If used properly —signing the fields recommended in Section 5.4.1 of DKIM and not, e.g., Content-Type:, Content-Transfer-Encoding:, and MIME-Version:— then it can pass across well behaved MLM transformations, if the header is canonicalized in relaxed mode.

The l= tag had a similar purpose, but it would only be usable for text/plain messages where the transformation only appends a footer and not a subject tag. Few signers use it.

note i did not write dmarc here

DMARC, and Yahoo and others, only made DKIM relevant.
