No, that would make it exactly backward: you substitute the new for the
old.  The way it’s written is correct and quite clear to native readers.
Is that really a phrasing that’s unclear to hon-natives (in which case we
should definitely rephrase it)?

(Actually, I thing it would be better to avoid “defang” anyway, and say
something like “make URIs unclickable by…”.)
