I'm coming into this a little late because I got a little behind on the
list mail but here's some thoughts...

If you don't plan to actually use the mic pre-amps on the Mackie VLZ
series ever, then don't bother paying for them.

Also, if you do pay for a mixer with built-in effects don't expect them
to be the best effects you've ever heard. They're generally just going
to be some bottom-end effects chips thrown in as a bonus feature. When
it comes down to it, it really is a mixer and the effects are separate.
That said, the O1v (from what I've heard about it) is exempt from this.
Of course, it also costs a whole heap more than the other mixers we're
talking about.

A buddy of mine has the Mackie 20 channel with the built-in effects, and
the effects are useable, but not super great. If you have need for a
little extra reverb and what-not, it might be worth the money, but I
probably wouldn't use it as the deciding factor.

For some reason, me and my buddies all use Mackie mixers, when it comes
to analog, but that's just habit and familiarity more than anything.
