I think getting the right sound is a combination of the gear you are using,
how you program it and how good your engineering is. When i first bought my
setup, it was ages before i had something running that sounded 'real'.
Getting the right bass sounds can even extend to how your notes are arranged
in your sequencer.

To be honest, if you have an emu ultra you can make absolutley anything you
want. They are sick machines and i wouldn't advise you spend unecessary cash
on more hardware. Listen to optical and try and grasp how the fuck he makes
his basslines! I have an e-mu xl-1 hardware sound module and it has pretty
much the same filters and lfos as your sampler and a lovely warm sound....

My Tips:

-Try layering multiple sounds and processing the fuck out of them to invent
new sounds of your own. If you listen to the way optical layers his sounds
it really is amazing. There is so much texture to his sounds.

-Are your bass sounds too dry? A dry (no effects added) bassline with
compression IS needed to give your track punch and solidness, but try adding
wet bass sounds of the same notes over the top, add some reverb, mess around
with your filters and lfos, etc.

Anyway, good luck!
