Here's an offshoot on this thread...

I have an older version of Cubase (3.65) that only supports 16-bit recording 
(I think). In any case my Layla soundcard is a little older, too and I know 
for sure it only supports up to 20 bit.

So my question is this: Is 16-bit sufficient for final mixdowns?

I've been using it to record all my tracks. Honestly, they sound better than 
the recording I've done using my DAT ( a pretty good Tascam).

What's the verdict?
