True, although many producers will work at these higher bitrates/frequencies
for the extra headroom and higher quality and THEN dither to 16bit/44.1khz.
I find the TrueTape 32bit facility a godsend when doing the final mixdown -
saves me having to worry about clipping.

Even if your soundcard doesn't support anything higher than 20bit it's well
worth upgrading to CubaseVST32 5.0, as all 32bit operations are performed on
the cpu when doing mixdowns (I think), meaning anyone can take advantage of
this useful feature.

At the end of the day, CD's are 16-bit, 44.1 KHz, so there's
no reason not to get good enough results. There are maybe
ways of getting better results, but if it sounds good
enough, and it's at what is still the industry standard for
consumers, it should be fine.

Here's an offshoot on this thread...

I have an older version of Cubase (3.65) that only supports
16-bit recording
(I think). In any case my Layla soundcard is a little older,
too and I know
for sure it only supports up to 20 bit.

So my question is this: Is 16-bit sufficient for final
mixdowns?

I've been using it to record all my tracks. Honestly, they
sound better than
the recording I've done using my DAT ( a pretty good
Tascam).

What's the verdict?
