If you're looking to spend about $6-700, I'd buy a used synth... there's alot
of good VA's that are only a few years old. I've used em all pretty much, so
here's how I'd rate em...

Access Virus Rack (seen em for 650ish... same sound as the other Viruses)
Waldorf Micro Q (killer, but too similar to my Virus so i sold it for a An1x)
Roland JP8000 (If ya need that Roland hoover bass, this is the one)
Yammy An1x (best deal in VA's, easily had for 400... very underated)
Supernova (just saw one for 700, not a big fan of the sound- too polite- but
that's alot of power for the money)

Non-VA's that rock under 700-

Waldorf Pulse
Oberheim Matrix 1000
Studio Electronics ATC-1 (one voice, but what a voice!)

I think if I only had 700 to spend on synths, I'd get a used Pulse and a
Matrix 1000 (with money left over for a FilterFactory!) and use softsynths
and samples for making pads and the like... most of the sounds we use are
based on analog sources anyway, and computers still can't replicate those
sounds well.

i want a virus c, but that ain't gonna happen for a while, so i've been

looking at smaller synths, and the waldorf micro q's going for ~$600 on some

sites (www.audiomidi.com, www.novamusik.com), and i remember people saying

they were pretty damn good... any experience? the only others in this price

range are the novation a station, which looks kinda cheap to me, and the

korg ms 2000 rack module, which only has 4-voice polyphony, compared to the

micro q's 25 which can be upgraded to 75. others are too simple or from

brands i've never known anyone to use (anyone have a red sound synth?) any

other synths i can look at definitely below $700 that are worth it?
