Work on your sounds, no there are no rules I'll agree, just when you take tunes that have been clipped in digital and run em through T-Racks or Ultramaximizer, I find I have less room to play around before the evil digital distotion creeps in.
Each sound should be nurtured though I find synths and samplers good as basic paints, and EQ and plugins in logic allow me to create bigger more interesting sounds. Thats what I'm comfortable with and it's taken me two years to say I'm comfortable. Some people prefer a hardware sequencer, some stomp boxes and a sampler ... whatever floats your turd I guess.
