Title: RE: [dnb-prod] Re: bass drums AND SNARES!!!
Sorry, I din't catch the initial part of this topic but I'd like to make some suggestions.

The secret to creating a pounding snare is not making it louder, but making it thick or brighter by having control over it's loudness through proper compression. Compress the hell out of it with a quick attack and slow release.. bring that up so that it just hits below 0db, and there it is, now what you have is a snare the doesn't just peak at a tiny spot in it's wavform but a snare that peaks throughout the whole hit. Even if it's distorting due to the extreme compression it will sound fine since the rest of the tune is clean. But if you were to push the uncompressed snare to a point where the tune clips, it compromises the integrity of the rest of the tune on mixdown, this way you have full control over it's loudness with proper headroom.

Also, some of the best DnB snares are created through white or pink noise generators. Afterall when compressing a premade snare the end product essentially sounds like that.

Your snare may sound very simulated after this but there are also delay tricks you can use to make the snare sound more organic, but that's too diffcult to explain here in a general way.

Outta Luck mode for 2 secs...

Take just one snare drum, then create, lets say three, different layers of the same drum. Change each by a few cents pitch. A little bit of reverb on one layered snare will help as well.

Peace

Martyn

yeah I cut everything up in recycle and always use the same groove quantise
on all my drums so that the timing is spot on - the problem I'm having is
getting the two or three snares to sound like one fat drum, rather than two
/ three drums stacked on top of each other...
