Oh and as for the clanging, make sure u trim all leading space off the snare samples and once layered, adjust the volumes of each to taste.

Terry,

yeah I did mean hz, that 33hz thing is something that I'm experimenting with after speaking to one of the engineers at the studio where I work. I maaged to get it to sound OK a few times but with a bassline over the top if sounded pants. from what your saying it sounds like the 33hz is just a bad idea, think I'll leave it alone...

But what about snares, I've been experimenting with layering up snares, one bright one eq'd around 4khz for the 'snap' and a more wooden one aaround 800hz for more body / fatness. It sounds ok-ish but I'm having alot of problems getting them to sit right, I've tried getting them into the same pitch and making sure the waves both peak in the same place but still often sounds like a an out of time mix, with the snares 'clanging' slightly. Any tips?

cheers

Damn man, kick drums @ 33hz( and I assume u meant hz NOT khz) ?!?!? No wonder you have problems getting them to sound right!! Bear in mind that most nearfield monitors don't go down that far on their frequency response. Personally, I roll off everything below 75hz and boost ~80Hz. And yeah, the same as other bods I layer a 909 (more "punch" than 808) kick underneath another kick with more mid/high frequencies. I often then notch off a bit at 200-800Hz to reduce muddieness. I also oftem notch off a bit @ ~80Hz on my bassline but boost ~50Hz to give the kick a bit off space. Works a treat :D

Easy fella,

What I often do is use two different bass drums, one quite low and subby (maybe even an old skool techno kick), eq'd at about 71hz and then another one that is has a bit more top end (maybe a sampled drum from a live kit / loop) with a bit more of a knocking sound eq'd around 1-2Khz you can also use another more subby bass drum eq'd around 33khz (use very sparingly!) but I have had problems getting them to sound right. When you're putting bass drums on top of each other, you might need to tune them all to the same pitch (or an octave above / below) also try and make sure the peaks (loudest part of the sound) are sitting right on top of each other by changing the start position of the sample. maybe worry about this bit after equing and layering though as you could be there for hours!

Hope this helps!

catch up soon,

Dan

sorry if this has been covered before but i was wondering how to process
bass drums to give them more depth and power. Ive heard that using reverb
followed by a gate has this kind of effect but it always sounds pants when i
try it. maybe i do something wrong. Ive also tried heavy compression but
ive still not been satisfied with the result. maybe i just need better
origional drum samples?

has anyone got any brief hints or tips? They would be greatly appreciated!
