Please don't think me harsh, I'm just being as honest as I can to help ya in the growing process :)
Honestly i hear some good ideas here but they're not very well developed... while I don't see the point in every song being dancefloor I also think there's a lot to be said about structure... but in every song there should be a functional and logical progression of energy and/or mood and this seems kind of even-keel all the way through... the intro drags a bit IMO... if you're going to build something up that much the drop should be more intense... cutting the intro to maybe 64 or 80 bars would probably do a lot in itself unless you wanted to go for more of an epic effect. and I would recommend maybe putting the bassline that comes in about 4:09 earlier on in the track and making it more of a point of focus throughout with variation here and there... the track is a little bit lacking in the dramatic effect that could be achieved with more of a "hook" (which the bassline generally provides). I think this would benefit a lot from more variation in drum patterns... the same pattern repeats over and over without much of a sense of build. What I would recommend doing is leaving your kicks and snares in roughly the same places (maybe changing it up and making slightly different, more syncopated / "off" patterns at beginning or ends of measures) but placing different arrangements of hats / cymbals / rides / percussion or percussive elements over them in different parts, maybe changing the arrangement every 16 or 32 bars... to illustrate what I mean I use kemal as an example... listen to something like kemal's "plan b" on timeless... SO MUCH VARIATION... and for what is an essentially simple track his drum programming carries the whole thing throughout because it's constantly changing. That little filtered fucked up break at the end could be edited into different patterns and used in several places in the track as well, at the end or beginning of a set of measures, sort of as "punctuation" between different sections of the track... just to keep the drum programming more interesting and all that. I agree with Josh about the horns/stabs... they get repetitive... try filtering maybe, maybe add some delay, flange, etc... change up the melody here and there... it's a bit too straightforward... something a little more elusive would add a bit of intrigue. Watch your levels... the atmospherics are excellent... overall - IMO it has potential, but needs work. keep at it and keep posting stuff :) I hope i was of some help and didn't just come across as a bitchy, jerky bastard. much respect, Andy -----Original Message----- From: James Lewis [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, February 20, 2003 10:17 AM To: Drum & Bass Arena Discussion List Subject: [dnb-prod] Check out my first good d'n'b track: Darkspace Hey, Although it has litrely taken me years to come up with my first good d'n'b tone.
