I think that hits the nail on the head.  If you're getting it released it's different. 
 If you're putting something together for demo's, etc, it doesn't (necessarily...) 
hurt to have a go at mastering.

Even then you should probably leave it to someone who knows how to master -
if they're good they'll have better ears, better monitoring equipment and
better plugins. This probably only applies to someone who's actually getting
their tunes released - if you're just learning (or doing it for kicks) then
their's no reason why you shouldn't have a go at mastering it yerself.

No one's mentioned T-Racks - that's pretty good too.

Mind you, I just spent a long weekend with Noisia (some Dutch producers
who've just signed to Nerve & Protogen) and they don't use any mastering
tools at all. You can't polish a turd.
