The 2gig limit does not cause expiration to occur. (it prevents incoming
news)
and the demo version doesn't have a 2gig limit only the 2gig licensed
version does.
My best guess is something was not restored, or the expire.conf was
faulty/wrong
even temoprarily. They should be able to re-restore the missing spool
files
and then do a rebuild_index to recover the lost items.
