There is a grace period. It was put there so that domain owners are able
to correct a mistake.

If there is a grace period, what would be proper would be to disable the
domain from working until it is renewed or the grace period expires when
it's available for grabs.

In the bit of time that the registrar gets access before it's renewed,
the website loses its reputation with nefarious ad serving. Yes
nefarious, because the "relevant" ads in question during that time would
be of the kind that would offer to let the user download GIMP, but get
something else on the computer. There doesn't have to be a risk of
that. Enough money is already charged for domain registration that such
quick switching tactics are unnecessary.

Car leases don't come with grace periods either.

We can argue this :) , but you surely understand the difference between
providing a clean 30 day grace period and what is happening now.
