I think I lucked out, and found a couple decent pages fairly quickly. Some of the ones I looked at weren't clear, too in-depth, or had other issues that I thinki would make then less than great for a beginner.
This one, though, seems to be the best, and seems aimed at total newcomers: http://www.rru.com/~meo/useful/vi/vi.intro.html The authors provide mnemonic clues to the commands, which is helpful. Going here: http://www.rru.com/~meo/useful/vi/ you can download text or PosrScript versions of it. I also liked this one, which has three sections equating with beginner, intermediate, and advanced. There is a Tips & Tricks section at the end: http://www.collaborium.org/onsite/romania/UTILS/vi/index.html which comes from: http://staff.washington.edu/rells/R110/ This vi link is very good but it's fairly comprehensive; it may be a little too much so: http://www.eng.hawaii.edu/Tutor/vi.html or the one by Bill Joy: http://locutus.kingwoodcable.com/jfd/vi.html This one's not too bad: http://locutus.kingwoodcable.com/jfd/vi.html or: http://unix.t-a-y-l-o-r.com/Vi.html Rainer
