Hiya Frank, Glad to hear you might be working on the Crash Dump book again! I'll chime in a vote for DocBook XML markup. I also wanted to mention that Liane Praza has written a makefile for PDF generation using FO and DocBook XML, for her smf-doc project. You should try it out, makes life really simple, see http://opensolaris.org/os/project/smf-doc
We now also have a SolBook XML DTD that validates and processes with xmllint and xsltproc, is usable with any free tools, editors, stylesheets, if you choose. It is just a simplified DocBook, but fully-conformant set of tags. Most of the books in the Docs consolidation use that currently, so you can download it, or I can send it along to you. There are 31 books in the tarball now, so you might find a suitable template there too. http://opensolaris.org/os/downloads/docs Let me know any other way I can help.
