Being that it's a 97, the OBD-II codes would be of far more value than the key-dance method. Get the OBD-II codes scanned (most places will do this for free -- AutoZone, Canadian Tire, or whatever you have locally) and post back results. It may have nothing to do with an O2 sensor.
Could have been why the owner sold it.....rather than selling it over an $80 O2 sensor. JMO. There is a way you can do the "key dance" but I'm not up to writing that much today, and AutoZone won't charge for the scan, plus, they can tell you what the problem is right then! There are 4 o2 sensors on your car, so only 1 got changed? Find out what's going on before you spend more money.
