It's probably the best strategy (emphasize performance) over the economy. I have inquired on the Highlander Hybrid, which is a clone of the Lexus Rx440h. It has great towing ability and the while I never expected the city mpg to match the EPA number, It is much better with it, than w/o it.
Also a key aspect Toyota has, they can run the A/C in electric mode or when standing at a light. Ford Escape cannot do that. The Ford must run the engine.
