-Have  you ever seen how some older cars smoke until they add a oil 
thickener or use higher viscosity oil? I had a Trans Am that would 
smoke (sometimes) after a long 'fast' drive. Oil gets past the 
rings, the oil ring seal is not 'ideal' and the engine starts 
burning oil with the loss in performance. Newer cars are 
still 'tight' with closer specs and tolerances, but as they wear, a 
higher viscosity makes up for the slight increase in engine wear, in 
the bearing and piston rings. Your mileage loss is amazing but 
possible. Does it smoke too at when the oil gets really hot with the 
5-30 lower viscosity oil?
