Probably tightening everything up was done as a preventative measure. 
In other words, they did a bunch of stuff that happened to fix it,
rather than diagnosing the exact cause and pinpointing that particular
repair.

Nothing wrong with that approach as long as you aren't paying for it
and it works.

I've learned that finding the precise source of a noise is more of an
art than a science.  Sometimes you get lucky, though.  One time, many
years ago when I worked as a service writer I had a customer take me
for a drive to demonstrate a noise to me.  I had a hunch, told the guy
to pull over halfway around the block, got out, and yanked his cheap
aftermarket wheel cover off one of the wheels.  Viola!  No more noise.
