There were two different engines that happened to be 3.5L in displacement.

#1 was used on the first generation Intrepids, Concordes, Eagle
Visions and Plymouth Prowlers. It made 214HP, had dual throttle
bodies, an iron block and aluminum heads.

#2 first appeared on the new-for-'99 300M. It made 250HP, had a
single throttle body, and was all aluminum (block as well as heads).
It also showed up on the Prowler that year.

For the 1998 and 1999 model years, Intrepids/Concords weren't
available with a 3.5L engine. The top engine choice for those years
was the 3.2L, which made 225HP. All other cars got the 2.7L

For 2000, the Intrepid R/T got the 3.5L engine. This made ~241HP, if
I remember the number right. Whatever the number, it was lower than
the 300M's engine.

At some point in time (2003?) there was a 300M "Special" with a dual
exhaust which got an additional 5hp over "regular" 300Ms. This made
the output about 255HP.

For (I think) 2002, the 3.2L engine was discontinued, and was replaced
with a lower-output 3.5L that made ~230HP. The Intrepid R/T had the
241HP version, and 300M still had the 250HP version. The police
Intrepid got the high output 3.5L (250HP), as well as heavy duty
cooling and brakes that caught fire(!).

For 2003/2004, the Intrepid R/T was discontinued and replaced with the
Intrepid SXT. That version of the car got the high output 3.5L
(250HP). Intrepid ES vehicles could get the low-output 3.5L(230HP).
Not sure what happened to the 300M "Special" All other cars came with
the 2.7L. Interestingly, the Pacifica got a *transverse* version of
the 3.5L engine rated at 250HP. They almost put this engine into the
Caravan as well, but canceled the project at the last minute. Dunno
why.

2004 was the end of the line for all LH cars, so the Intrepid, 300M,
and Concord all went out of production. Somewhere I have a picture of
the last Intrepid going down the line. That one happened to get a
2.7L.

Confused yet?

The point is all 3.5Ls are not the same. That engine size encompasses
two different basic designs. The later design had at least three
different horsepower ratings, depending on the car it went into. All
of the later 3.5 engines were more powerful _and_ quieter than the
earlier 3.5L, however, which had only one version as far as I can
recall.

Up until the end of the LH model run, the 2.7L was essentially the
same throughout. It makes about 200HP.

Personally, I prefer the original, dual-throttle-body 3.5L over the
3.2L I currently have. Even though the horsepower rating is lower, my
backside tells me the 3.5L had more torque, and since it is a
non-interference design, busting the timing belt wouldn't damage the
engine horribly, as with what happened to my 3.2L last year.

I haven't driven any version of the later 3.5L engine. I hear it's nice.

And if I ever run across a wrecked Pacifica with the engine for sale
for cheap, I'm plucking it out and stuffing it into my project
Acclaim. But that's another story.
