I take it the backfire is through the exhaust and not the intake? Sounds like you might have an injector that's leaking down, or several of them, and raw fuel is making its way into the exhaust. There's a spec for how long and how well the fuel system is supposed to hold pressure after the engine shuts down; you check it with a fuel pressure gauge (about $35 at better auto parts stores.)
