Pumping the accelerator on these cars just actuates the throttle butterfly.
It really doesn't do much of anything that would impact this symptom as far
as I know.

The white smoke from under the hood is a scary symptom.  I can imagine one
thing that might cause that, but it doesn't seem likely in a car that
actually does start and run well after awhile: cam timing that's jumped a
tooth or two.  The question is, does it really run well once you do get it
going?  Are you really gentle on the car, and wouldn't necessarily notice a
performance problem?  Because cam timing that's this far off is pretty
noticeable in terms of reduced power, louder-than-normal exhaust, etc.

If it is a cam timing issue it needs to get into the shop immediately,
you're headed for big, expensive trouble otherwise.  Which engine is this
thing?
