Thanks for replying.

I'll try to describe as best as I can.

When I go out and start the car. I turn it over. If I let off the key too soon, 
It doesn't start, and sometimes the car will backfire from under the hood. And 
on two occasions, I've had white smoke come from under the hood.

To ensure this doesn't happen again, I've gotten in the habit of pumping the 
accelerator a couple times, before I turn it over. This seems to help.

Any help you can give is surely appreciated...

 Sounds like you might have an injector that's leaking down, or several of
 them, and raw fuel is making its way into the exhaust.  There's a spec for
 how long and how well the fuel system is supposed to hold pressure after the
 engine shuts down; you check it with a fuel pressure gauge (about $35 at
 better auto parts stores.)
 
 Any black smoke on startup?
