I don't have a LOT of information on this topic, but here's what I do know...
The 42LE transmission went through a number of revisions during the
time it was being put into the 1st generation Intrepid.  One thing
that changed was the type of seals that were used along the driveline
of the trans.  My understanding is that they just about had it right
by the time the 97s came out, and the 98 and up vehicles, although not
perfect, have pretty reliable transmissions.  There are folks out
there who have done 2nd generation trans->1st generation Intrepid
swaps in order to get all the benefits of the redesigned
transmissions, since rebuilding an early unit to the later standards
can be prohibitively expensive.
