The little black boxes are relays -- they act as a go between of the
high amperage motors and circuits in the car and the low-amp switches
inside the passenger compartment (essentially, they protect you from
shocking yourself because you turned something on).

The only way I've ever been able to tell if they're bad is to switch
some of them around and see if things start working. Make sure if you
switch them around that they're EXACTLY the same -- lettering on top is
the same -- otherwise something might fry.

Is the Check Engine light on? If so, maybe you could borrow someone's
code reader and get the codes out of the computer to figure out what's up.
