My across-the-street neighbor is a retired GM engineer.  He has had 4
3.8Lengines in the time I've known him.  Two of them blew up rather
spectacularly.  These were later-model engines, from the late 90s, I believe
they were Series II engines (might be wrong about that part.)  The oldest
one, a 1989 model Series I 3.8L, is pretty bulletproof.

I would say, based on my very limited experience with the 3.8L that it is
generally a good engine, but certainly no better than the 3.2/3.3/3.5L
engines.  It may well be more "reliable" than the 2.7L.  Given a choice
between a 3.8L and a 2.7L, I would still choose the 2.7L and make sure I
maintained the heck out of it.
