The body on the 2nd generation LHs appears to be very resilient to rust,
however it doesn't mean it's impervious. I had occasion to remove the rear
bumper from my 98 Intrepid recently and noticed the beginnings of rust
forming on sheetmetal that's not normally visible. I also have observed the
beginnings of rust in the pinch welds along the underside of the doors, and
more advanced rust on the pinch weld on the leading edge of the hood. My
dealership's body shop has talked me into spending the $140 (US) to have my
Grand Cherokee sealed up after finding the early signs of pinch weld rust
along the driver's door. If it keeps it from rusting at all -- keeping in
mind that the corrosion protection is pretty good to begin with -- it's
money well spent. If you don't plan on keeping the car for a long time, it
may not be worth it to you, but it sounds like your Intrepid was well
maintained by its previous owner, so it seems a shame not to do the same.
