EJ, I work with an electrical engineer, and he has confirmed to me (on more than one occasion) that there should be no concern with WD-40 causing an electrical short.

The WD-40 may leave a conducting residual. That residual may cause a potential electrical short. CRC makes a aerosal contact cleaner that has an evaporating effect. Spray WD-40 into the switch, rotate the inserted key several times through it's travel, back and forth, repeat the WD-40 and key rotation. Hopefully this will clean the contacts. I'm not familiar with the '97, or what you'll need to do to access the ignition switch. I don't even know where the switch is located on your car.....somewhere on the steering column.
