On many dual systems you start on the magneto and then switch on the second
ignition system (as it has no starting retard).
Will,  would we be able to borrow the head with second ignition holes?...We
have a spare set of heads that we want to get re-engineered to include dual
plugs
cheers

Mag comes out very easily without removing the engine - about a 40min job
taking care. Modification of a 6mm (?) - long handle alen key is required to
make it very easy and take off the RH air filter along with throttle and choke
assembly rods and bob's your uncle. Have taken ours out 3 times now with no
real difficulty. I sent ours to Ian at Aviation Intrument and Electrical
Services, Building 2, Second St, Moorabin Airport, Mentone, VIC, 3194 - 03
95871652.

There have been a couple questions asked about dual ignition - we have a dual
ignition setup which is merely a back up and I think it cannot be certified as
it is an automotive unit and I am not sure you can retard the spark like an
impulse coupling on a mag for startup - hence mag still required? (Dimona
expert needed here to confirm). Also people want to drill new holes in the head
and we will have a spare head off our old engine that we will send to Nigel
Baker and people could use as a template.

Our engine had the exhaust valve head fall off in cylinder 4 and upon landing
cylinder 4 was not in the engine! Hence we are buying a new engine and have a
spare head with no pot.

Cheers,

Ian - you may be confusing the issue a little here.
The L2000 is single ignition, so flying to the nearesr airport may not be an
option following a mag failure!

In a single ignition engine the mag needs to be
inspected also at 250 hours.

It is supposed to be possible to change the mag
without removing the engine, but don't know how.

No No continue with Slick BUT add an electronic ignition with
bottom holes in head. A good magneto (especially with a jet of cool air onto
case) is TOTALLY reliable and that is what you want.  Our Sauer manual says
"if magneto fails fly to nearest airport and have it repaired but if electronic
ignition fails then flow to your home airfield and repair then"  Also I
think you would loose your certification with electronic ignition.

It might be old technology and heavy but it is reliable

That is my thoughts

Hi
  all!

I´m just about to do a 500hr service in my magneto. Whilst looking
at this big heavy piece of sparklemachine the idea stuck me that it would be
  more fun to use
electronic ignition. Is there any available for the Limbach
  L2000?

Also - is there any easy way to remove the magneto or does the
  engine have to be removed?
Thanks!

Best regards
  Lasse
