To DOGs and other 2/4 stroke aviation users This fuel quality issue is so interesting. Years ago Bruce Taylor at 3500ft ASL suspected poor auto fuel was his issue so he got some guess 2 year old Avgas and it burst into life. We did a bit of research with help of Dave Sharples and did find there is City 98 has tricks done on it like butane bubbled through it but that fuel should only go out only to city outlets (not country) and be used up quickly. Each time this 98 fuel goes up and down in a tug say it looses its octane rating and could easily become 95 and city fuel can come to country NSW in error.
I also bring your attention to a Jabiru SB on fuels and in particular Shell 98 (also Liberty in our area) and in parts of SA I notice Liberty deliver to Shell service station. Jabiru say use Shell 95 or Avgas. They say DO NOT USE Shell 98 in fibreglass tanks and they are currently using large amounts Toluene in their fuel. That fuel turns clear plastic fuel lines very dark brown in a matter of weeks (Arcus in LHS of rear seat and early motorfalkes with clear sight tube for fuel and that is with clear tube from Germany factories marked for use with Oil/Gas in German). Rob Hanbury in WA reports toluene in WA fuel As far as I remember Dr Hodges who issues the STC to use auto fuels in Tugs/Cessna etc supplies a volatility tester. A local now RAA pilot used this device to test local BP fuel which he suspected. He reported his results to BP and they checked their records and records from the ex Italian who owned the 6 local BP outlets. All BPs were closed for 24 hours BP took over deliveries and forced him to sell off all his service stations. It all went to court and think he and his son (tanker driver in middle of night) may have spent time at Glen Innes as a guest of state. He did give $250K to a local charity for young people before the court case. By the way if registered for GST a club can claim back think 37c/lit tax back for off road use of auto fuel. Dr Hogges does recommend still use Avgas for as tetra ethyl lead is still a good lubricant and I do know Keepit blend is 25% AVgas and 75% 98 (they have high compression 0540) Anything beyond 20% lead is just for octane rating.
