I certainly trust Verisign and ICANN to do something which is more fair on average than the result you're going to get by letting every registrar grab what they can, yes. What you're missing is that if you're saying it's okay for Tucows to do this, you're saying it's okay for other companies to do it. Meaning you're never going to have a shot at any good domains expiring at GoDaddy, etc. > According to your website, Robert, "Tiger Technologies is an > ICANN-accredited domain name registrar". Actually, our business is almost entirely domain names given for free with hosting services; there's basically zero chance anyone would ever seek out my company to bid on an auctioned domain name. On the other hand, I *would* make money if Tucows auctioned off our expiring hosting domains, or I auctioned them off myself. So nice try, but no; what I'm saying actually goes against my financial self-interest. (If I were greedy, I'd actually be encouraging other registrars to grab expiring domain names so that I could blend into the crowd and do the same. I'm not: when domains expire that we register directly, we delete them, and will continue to do so. I want Tucows to do the same thing with my domains registered through them; it's the Right Thing to do unless a consensus policy decides otherwise.) Anyway, if Verisign starts an auction, I'm sure Tucows would offer the ability for resellers to participate in bidding, so other resellers would get "a piece of the expired domains game" just like registrars -- in fact, that's part of my point above; if auctions were at the registry level, everyone (resellers included) would be able to make money from domain names expiring everywhere. But balkanizing it means none of us here can participate in that end of things, even if you wanted to. -- Robert L Mathews _______________________________________________ domains-gen mailing list [email protected] http://discuss.tucows.com/mailman/listinfo/domains-gen
