While you all were groovin' to "Jericho" and rockin' to "45th Floor", I was
on vacation at the Grand Canyon this Tuesday & Wednesday. I couldn't help
but wonder what the new album was like. So on the way back home to Colorado,
I vowed to stop at the first CD store I saw. I found one in Moab, UT & five
minutes later it was in my CD player & we were rockin' down the highway!
After listening to the CD five times during the next six hours of driving,
all I can say is WOW - this is a great album & very different. I won't bore
you with comments that have already been stated but I would like to say a few
things. First - I don't want to be negative because the Doobies can do no
wrong in my book - but I'll just call them "weird" things about the CD:
the WEIRD stuff:
1. There's no Pat Simmons rocker (ie: Something You Said or Dangerous)
2. Nobody proofread the book - quite a few typos
3. I would've liked more listings about who plays what & sings what on
different tracks. I Remember when One Step Closer came out & I didn't know
who sang lead on the title track til I saw them in concert that year.
Especially With John & Keith doing vocals that would've helped.
4. Maybe a newer photo than the 1998 photo in the centerfold.
Well enough of the negative.....Here's my opinion on the CD
The good stuff:
1. Lyrically, their best album ever.
2. Lyrically, their most mature album ever. I don't think I have ever payed
more attention to the lyrics of an album than this one.
3. Their most spiritual album ever - no less than five songs mention in some
way God or the like. I'm not a spiritual person myself but it is interesting
to see the boys going in this direction.
4. Keith voice is perfect for "On Every Corner" , John is awesome on
"Angels". By the way, what the heck is that song about??????????????
5. You can tell they took their time recording this . The production,
songwriting, musicianship & harmonies are flawless.
6. I cracked up when I heard the line "Don't inhale - on the 45th Floor" -
great song!
"Jericho" is Tommy at his funky best and possibly the Doobies best dance song
ever. "Can't Stand To Lose" made my girlfriend cry. Nuff said!
I feel this album has a little a what made all the rest of their albums
great: rock, jazz, country, R&B.
