Jason,
 Is there a specific version or a greater than, version of KiCad that we
should be using during this workshop?  I understand that the "stable"
versions in Ubuntu's repository is quite outdated, so I imagine that we
should be using a fairly new version from the KiCad sight. Is that an
accurate assumption?
