I have a gas range, a jenn-air, that has an electronic control... Or half
of one. About half the buttons fail to register. I had a repair guy come
out once, and he couldn't tell me which part was bad, either the keypad, or
the "computer". The range cost us $1100 or something close to that,
originally, 10 or 12 years ago. The cheaper replacement part is $200. The
keypad connects to the "computer" by way of two flex-cables. One of them
has 8 conductors, and the other has 7. My guess is that one cable drives
the segmented display, and the other one reads the key presses. A while
ago, I ordered some connectors for the flex cable so that I could try to
figure out how the buttons were wired. Tonight I dug them out and tried,
with my wife holding (or pretending to) the buttons. However, I couldn't
get a single chirp out of my continuity tester. Does anyone have any
experience working on these things? I searched the inter webs, and came up
substantially no better off than when I started. Clues welcome! I'm
inclined to replace the whole computer/display with a teensy and some
toggle switches, all Altair 8800 style.
