According to the Internets, it's common for the touchpad to fail due to
heat, at least on the ranges with a touchpad directly above the oven
door (go figure.)
Replacement touchpad available for ~$200.
For both safety and kitchen-harmony reasons, I would recommend against
trying to shave any more pennies off than that, no matter how
creatively.
