LyX is good, there's also a really good gedit plugin for writing LaTeX.
It's a little more rustic than LyX, but good if you want finer control
over the code.

Alternatively, if compiling by hand it's a good idea to install rubber
and get that to do a lot the hard work for you (integrating bibtex files
etc.).
