You've got me interested now ;-)

I installed OOoLatex and after a bit of configuring, managed to get it to
process the equation posted earlier. However, it generates so much log text
in a dialogue box that the end of it is off the screen, somewhere to the south
of Ventnor! I can't see whether it's doing anything or just flagging up
errors. I get nothing into the document anyway.

I then investigated a bit further and found that (K)Ubuntu has a tool called
writer2latex in its repositories, which installs as an OOo extension, (as does
OOoLatex). This allows me to paste the formula into my into my document and
then export the result as a .tex file. However, I then need to use Lyx or
something to display it. (Which kind of defeats the object, because Lyx seems
to do a good job of displaying mathematical formulae and symbols without tex
anyway.)

I think what the OP wants to do is paste his formulae into OOo and have it
display them in some way. I can't see how to do it, but I feel as if there
should be a way. I remember doing something like this years ago, where I
created the formula, exported it as an image, and then pasted the image into
my document. For the life of me, I can't remember what I did ;-(
