Talking of Nouveau, I shoved in that .conf file, fingers crossed, and everything turned out fine. The risk is a duplicate conf file somewhere in the old system; probably my fault. Too bad. Meanwhile - I put on one of neat new backgrounds for the desktop. It was a picture of a galaxy in space. I thought it was lovely, but then when I looked again it had changed to Jupiter, spots and all. Live backgrounds as standard? Most pleased!
