Interesting comments all, thanks ...

It does seem I am not alone in being a bit underwhelmed with the way
Unity/Gnome3 is going. I guess 'we' are not the target demographic...
I actually bounced Ubuntu 11.04 off my main desktop when its 3GB RAM
started creaking, which struck me as ridiculous. I went to Lubuntu,
and after a brief getting-used to it phase am fairly happy with that.

I played briefly with Gentoo once. Left a LUG meeting with an install
10% done... bit hard core for me nowadays tbh.

I ran Xubuntu once on an old Panasonic Toughie with quite low memory -
worked pretty well as I recall.

funny how things come around, isn't it! I was put off KDE in the early
days, preferring the ascetic Gnome over the (as I saw it then)
Fisher-Price-y shininess of KDE. Then a while ago at a Hants LUG meet
I saw KDE runing on Anton's laptop and thought that it actually looked
quite smart. I am downloading it for a test drive as we speak. Arch
also, I recall, sounded interesting a while ago.

I guess if I do get a VM setup sorted then trying various distros out
is actually not that much of a pai.

After a good few years of being happy with Ubuntu this feels almost
like the old days, picking and trying out different distros. Quite
exciting really!

thanks all,

see some of you tonight, hopefully -
