Interesting - I remember looking at LDAP for exactly this a few years
back but recall Thunderbird couldn't do updates.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ldapaddrbook/ may be the answer?

of suggestions.

I'm feeling pleased - I have OpenLDAP working, with all my email
addresses and lists transferred and accessible from Thunderbird, and
I've installed Jxplorer on both machines to do the maintenance.
Now I need to do the same thing for my Calendar......
