We use Confluence at my gaff.

IMO, it's not really well-suited for being a "social network". It's
more of a wiki / document repository, which is what we use it for. It
is very flexible, though, and could be useful for more measured and
structured conversations.

You can get a free trial for 30 days. It might be worth giving it go.

HipChat is pretty good for live/livish communication. It's easy to miss
stuff while you're away. It's basically IRC with a memory.

We use Skype for that purpose, because we're gluttons for punishment.
