I have never used KDE, so can't help with KMail/Kubuntu specifics; but from
a shell window in your home dir, if there's a particular string that you
can recall having used / seen in a mail (let's say Svarowski Crystal) you
could t
ry doing

$ grep -r ~ 'Svarowski Crystal'

and see if anything comes up.
Maybe try the same in the base directory of your backup.
