I finally found where it had gone (~/.local/share/local-mail/). (I don't know
why that folder didn't show up when I searched for 'mail', but it didn't.)
I copied it from the backup to the new /home directory and nothing...
Finally, I found that a clean installation of KMail puts the mail directories
into ~/.local/share/akonadi_maildir_resource_0/! Once I had copied the
directories from the /local-mail dir to the /akonadi... dir, it worked.
So since its inception, the developers of KMail seem to have changed their
minds at least three times as to where the mail should be stored. They wonder
why their users are less than complimentary sometimes.
