Hi,
A few weeks ago, we finally got full fibre to our house. The provider
is EE and they supply a so-called 'Smart Hub' to connect to the fibre
via an optical translator. Despite the name, the hub isn't particularly
smart and I miss many of the features that I had with the old Netgear
Nighthawk router I used when we were with Plusnet. Having said that, we
have a good fast connection and most things work OK.
The one problem is my Netgear ReadyNAS 212. This is quite old now and
is no longer supported by Netgear, but with the old connection,
everything worked alright, even while we were using an EE Super Hub on
FTTC. With the new router, I can connect to it over the internal
network, either with a browser or a file manager, but it plainly has no
access to the Internet, because each day, at noon, I get this message by
email:
'Antivirus scanner definition file update failed due to download
failure. Check your Internet connection.'
I've tried all of the suggested solutions on the Internet, including the
Netgear Community Support pages, but nothing seems to work. The mainly
seem to be ensuring that DNS Servers are correctly identified, so I
changed the settings from static IP Address to DHCP, both in the
ReadyNAS and in the Router. When I do that, the Router tells the
ReadyNAS to use 192.168.1.254 as a DNS Server (that's it's own IP
Address), but I've also added 8.8.8.8 for good measure.
BTW, I get a similar error when I try to check for firmware updates, but
with a little more detail. This error comes up in a dialog box and
suggests 'Check your internet connection, DNS Settings or proxy
Settings'. I don't believe the the Hub provides a proxy server'.
