I agree that a release is long overdue (I planned 1.4.1 in 2008 but never got around to it!), and "current git" while a moving target and "current svn" before that have been almost always stable enough and better than 1.4.0 to be used by distributions (this is in fact what they've all been doing now for awhile AFAIK, RPMFusion as above, but also Ubuntu/Debian, OpenSUSE, Arch Linux, ALT Linux, and Mageia, a quick google search reveals). Just tarring up a git checkout will look a bit odd though, especially the NEWS file (if there are volunteers who want to check the SF issues for closed reports and read the git log to update it, it would be most welcome -- otherwise I'll do it myself when I have more time again). There's a backlog of SF issues that should be resolved (including also updating the dosemu-freedos tarball, a lot more runs with FD 1.1 incl. Windows 3.1) but it's not 100% necessary for a quick release. Family commitments leave me very little time for DOSEMU these days though I'll try. Then there is a little thing called a version number: 1.4.1? 1.6.0? Or just do as Linus and call it 2.0?
