Hi X. On my opinion WPF realization of Waveforms can be, even, faster than win forms (due to hardware acceleration).
To visualize playing song, you can start with learning about FFT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FFT), and than just apply FFT transform to "window" in currently playing song.
