before learning ASP.NET or WinForms or WPF, i suggest you get a strong handle on the language you decide to program with, C# or VB.NET. If you taking the C# route, try Visual C#.NET Step by Step by John Sharp (Microsoft Press). Designing an app is useless if it doesnt do anything, and if you make web applications, ASP.NET can only take you so far.
