Hello!

This week was much more active than the previous one. Porting DoudouLinux to
Debian Squeeze, the latest stable Debian release, has started thanks to DrEagle
aka. Gérald who joined the team this week. We also started translations into
Persian and a first CD has been built to test the Persian environment (it is
written with an augmented Arabic alphabet, thus from right to left). Finally
Richard started to write a presentation of DDL and we are now sharing this work
on the mailing list. Plus a lot of stuff of course…

Cheers,
JM.

PS: if you feel that I forgot to mention an important news, feel free to answer
this mail with your scoop!

Team
=====

* We welcomed a developer contributor: DrEagle (Gérald). He started to port DDL
to the latest Debian release this week and also wants to build an ARM version
of DDL fully based on Debian. I'll give more infos in the CD section of this
mail.

* We also welcomed our first Persian contributor who has already started to
translate the CD: Nava. Nava may also help for graphics and I understood that
he can also write code. He was dreaming of creating a child OS, this is why he
joined our team ;).

Welcome to our project!

Organization
===========

* I opened an IRC channel for DoudouLinux on freenode (see message
https://mail.gna.org/public/doudoulinux-dev/2011-03/msg00050.html). The purpose
is to let the team discuss about any topic without making too much noise on the
list. We can also provide there quick help for our new (or less new)
contributors. Of course you're all invited to join the channel even if you
don't have anything to tell yet!

Please note that I'll be mostly available in the evening on this channel,
likely between 20h and 23h GMT.

Translations
===========

* I received several translation files for Chinese (Samsongcn), Dutch
(FrenchR), Polish (Paweł), Spanish (Yago) and Swedish (Lars).

* Many translations for Greek were also provided by Panos and we are now above
95% CD translated.

* Finally many translations were achieved by Nava for Persian.

* As Persian is now in our list, I updated website-download on Transifex.

Of course the intermediary update 2011-03 will be released for Persian too.

CDROM
=======

* A new build of the English version was uploaded yesterday to the dailybuild
section (see http://download.doudoulinux.org/dailybuild/). This version has
just drivers added for touchscreens and tablet PC's. This task is addressing
the request for assistance #2715 (see message
https://mail.gna.org/public/doudoulinux-dev/2011-03/msg00047.html).

* A first CD build for Persian was uploaded yesterday to the dailybuild section
to let Nava check the Persian environment (keyboard layout, fonts, etc.)

* Gérald started to build a DDL based on Debian Squeeze instead of Debian
Lenny. This work was planned for mid 2011 but we now have a contributor who's
interested in doing this now: that's just perfect! He's already been able to
build a CD and noticed several packages that need replacement or investigation.
As the final CD is currently weighting 800 MB we'll also have to analyze how to
put him on a diet ;).

* Gérald opened a new branch “live/experimental/squeeze/” on SVN to share his
work. I'm still working on the current version of DDL in the branch
“live/trunk/”. We'll manage to backport my changes to his branch on the flow.

Gérald also proposed to port DDL to ARM architectures. Currently only
Intel-like architectures are supported (x86 and x86_64). Porting to ARM was
identified as an interesting work few months ago because there are more and
more low cost devices based on ARM, ie. most of handheld devices. So we were
already willing to have DDL on ARM in a near future.

The port will consist in building the DDL CD with a flag telling to use the ARM
variant of Debian (no need to build it from an ARM computer). Currently the
Debian ARM version is not very efficient but it is being upgraded to fit the
latest ARM processors with floating point capabilities. This work will likely
start after the migration to Debian Squeeze is achieved. We'll need hardware
for testing, I hope our future association, the DoudouLinux foundation, will be
there on time to take this role…

Graphics
========

No news.

Website
=======

* Benheng proposed a Chinese page for publication. I corrected one link which
was pointing to a French page and made it point to the English one while
waiting for its Chinese translation.

* Sergey and later me, have updated the contributor list (English) on our
website, see
http://www.doudoulinux.org/web/ecrire/?exec=articles_versions&id_article=83&id_version=29&id_diff=27#diff

* I converted into an article of the English section the Polish translation of
our template promotion article made by GDR. Of course it is Polish ;) (see
http://www.doudoulinux.org/web/english/tell-the-world/communication-supports/article/szablon-artykul-promocyjny).

* Elisa is working on a Portuguese version of the template article, to be
proofread by a native Portuguese speaker.

* A news was published to announce that translation into Greek has started.

* We still have to write a news to announce that DDL joined the OIN plus a news
to tell that Persian has started plus a news to tell that the migration to
Squeeze is on the road…

Communication
=============

* Richard started a presentation of DDL for the Maracaibo FLISOL event on
9-April (see http://flisol.org.ve/). We took this opportunity to start to write
the official presentation of DDL that will then be available on our website.

* Sergey reported about his latest publications on the Russian web (see
https://mail.gna.org/public/doudoulinux-dev/2011-03/msg00037.html). As a result
we've been seeing more Russian speaking visitors since 2-3 weeks.

* Denis is trying to have additional Dutch speaking supporters to help
translate the website into Dutch.

* I registered our project on the famous Freshmeat website (see
http://freshmeat.net/projects/doudoulinux).

Support
